Music made in people’s bedrooms, closets, makeshift studios, shows in living rooms, basements, small venues, have always tapped into DIY ethos.
5 years ago, CULOTTES, a 4-part comp of Atlanta and Athens DIY music, was created. With a concentration of queer ppl, femmes and allies, CULOTTES not only showcased the variation of the local community at that time, but also the way in which genres were blending and shifting within “indie” music at large, more expansive and experimental than ever before. Half guitar-based and half electronic, flourishes of “internet girl rap” to ethereal ambient, twee-pop to bossanova, noise punk to hyper-house… CULOTTES is a slice of our fair Southeastern region and the ways in which artists were supporting each other, allowing space to become more expressive than ever before.

The cliches of the ATL scene as a garage-saturated Vice-dusted machismo had somehow been promoted as the majority in a city buzzing alive with so much joy in collaboration. And yet, this smorgasbord of budding creativity had not been properly documented. A plethora of independent artists and groups, mostly within sub-genres like dream pop, shoegaze, art-punk, ambient electronic, were forming into small communities, laying the foundation for the shape of the scene to come. The CULOTTES comps featured groups who actively toured, including Warehouse, Coco & Clair Clair, Suno Deko, Femignome, DEHD, alongside intimate solo projects. The comp was also graced with exclusive songs from the multi-talented performer and organizer TAYLOR ALXNDR and previously unreleased material from Twin Studies, provided by former vocalist Aubrey Meers.

This 4-part compilation can be purchased by album or by song and is not for profit. UPDATE: All proceeds from 2022’s Bandcamp sales will be donated to Free99Fridge, which stocks community fridges to feed the ATL community in need. (It appears there is no “Bandcamp Friday” in 2022.) Enjoy!
